Sidney Istre

A registered sex offender from New Iberia is suspected of molesting boys from 2003 to 2005 while on fishing trips near Franklin, officials said.

Sidney Istre, 63, was arrested in Iberia Parish on a warrant issued by St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office. Iberia authorities on Monday moved Istre to St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center.

Istre was booked into the parish jail on five counts of oral sexual battery and six counts of forcible rape. Istre remains in jail and is being held without bail.

Traci Landry, sheriff’s spokeswoman, said a detective looked into a recent complaint of oral sexual battery that allegedly occurred multiple times from 2001 to 2003 on a 6-year-old boy. During that investigation, the detective learned of another incident involving a 12-year-old that occurred in 2003.

“Istre committed the molestations during fishing trips that he would take children on in the Franklin area,” Landry said.

Istre is a registered sex offender. He was convicted in 2005 of indecent behavior with juveniles, she said. The accusations he is now accused of are additional offenses.

Crowley woman killed, passenger hurt in crash

Acadia Parish authorities Tuesday continued an investigation into a fatal automobile crash over the weekend that killed a Crowley woman and badly injured a passenger.

The single-vehicle crash occurred about 3:30 a.m. Sunday when Nicole Marie Hebert veered off the road near the intersection of Harmon and Goodrich roads, Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Maxine Trahan said in a news release.

Both occupants of the vehicle were ejected. Hebert was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Dr. Mark Dawson, Trahan said.

The passenger, Ricky Paul Sonnier, was taken to American General Hospital in Crowley with severe injuries. Trahan said Tuesday she did not have an update on Sonnier’s condition.
