A 47-year-old Breaux Bridge man died Wednesday afternoon Butte Larose after losing control of his motorcycle and sliding into oncoming traffic, where he was struck by a St. Martin Parish school bus, State Police said.
Dennis Labbie was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries, said Master Trooper Brooks David, a Louisiana State Police spokesman.
Labbie was driving a Harley Davidson motorcycle south on La. 3177 near Evangeline Street in Butte Larose when he lost control of the bike just before 4 p.m., David said.
Neither the driver of the school bus, 63-year-old Donald Stelly, nor the six passengers on board were hurt, David said.
Troopers aren’t sure why Labbie lost control of the motorcycle. David said Labbie was wearing a DOT-approved helmet at the time.
Stelly, the bus driver, agreed to take a chemical test at the scene of the crash and showed no signs of impairment, David said. A toxicology sample from Labbie was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab in Baton Rouge for analysis.
The crash remains under investigation.
