Talk on counseling suicidal individuals

LAFAYETTE — A professional development workshop, “Counseling the Suicidal Individual in the Modern Age,” will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Cecil J. Picard Center for Development and Lifelong Learning at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Dr. David Lester, distinguished professor of psychology at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and president-elect of the American Association of Suicidology, is the featured speaker.

The workshop is sponsored by the ULL Department of Counselor Education, Lafayette Parish School System, Lafayette Professional Counselors Association and the Picard Center.

Awards banquet honors professors

LAFAYETTE — The annual University of Louisiana at Lafayette Distinguished Professor Awards Banquet will honor four professors during a 6 p.m. ceremony Thursday at the Cajundome Convention Center.

This year’s “Distinguished Professor” honorees are Keng Deng, professor of mathematics, and Lynda Frese, professor of visual arts.

The honorees for the Dr. Ray P. Authement Excellence in Teaching Award are Janis R. Guilbeau, assistant professor for the College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions, and Robert Willey, associate professor for the School of Music.

Women’s history presentation set

LAFAYETTE — A Women’s History Month presentation on a collection of oral histories about the lives of Louisiana women will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Alumni Center.

Alecia P. Long, an associate professor of history at LSU, will discuss the oral history project during the presentation hosted by the ULL Center for Louisiana Studies and the history department.

The free event is open to the public.
