LAFAYETTE — As of Tuesday, four people — one in Louisiana and three from outside the state — had applied for the Lafayette Parish school superintendent post.
The job application period started Monday and closes Sept. 12. The public can add to the list of qualifications during forums scheduled from Aug. 18 to Sept. 22.
The School Board is targeting selection of a new superintendent by Dec. 7 ahead of the expiration of outgoing Superintendent Burnell Lemoine’s contract on Dec. 31.
The applicants for superintendent as of late Tuesday afternoon are:
• Wayne Alexander, of Old Lyme, Conn., who holds a doctorate of education in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University. He is a director and special education teacher for Hartford public schools. From 2007 to 2009, Alexander was the superintendent of Hernando County in Brooksville, Fla., with a student population of 23,000.
• Luis Gonzales, of Harrisburg, Pa., who holds a doctorate in administration from the University of Texas. Since 2009, Gonzales has been the superintendent and chief executive officer of Central Dauphin school district in Harrisburg.
• Arthur D. Gottlieb, of Queensbury, N.Y., holds a master’s degree in school district administration and a certificate from the New York State School Superintendent Development Program. He is an adjunct professor of biology at the College of St. Joseph in Rutland, Vt., and an adjunct professor of education at SUNY-Plattsburgh, Queensbury campus.
• Karl Reichman, of Jackson, holds a professional diploma in administration and supervision from Long Island University. He is president and owner of SAGE Educational Consulting. From 2006 to 2010, Reichman served as the “superintendent/director” of Lake County International Charter School in Middletown, Calif.
All applications will be vetted by staff in the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s College of Education to ensure candidates possess the state’s minimum requirements for district superintendents, said Christine Payton, university spokeswoman.
A “risk-taker,” a “consensus-builder,” and “a proven record of integrity, courage, stability under pressure, flexibility and sound judgment” are some of the attributes listed in the School Board’s advertisement on the website: http://www.lpssonline.com/superintendentsearch.
The public forums are designed as roundtable discussions — similar to dialogue sessions held throughout the district’s master planning process for facilities. The forums will allow residents to give feedback on what they think the district needs from a new leader.
Those who are unable to attend a forum may submit their opinions via an online survey that will be made available when the forums begin, said Angela Simoneaux, the district’s marketing and recruitment coordinator, in an email.
The feedback will be used during the School Board’s selection process, board members have said.
