Lafayette Middle sets Earth Day event

LAFAYETTE— The Lafayette Middle School’s Environmental Science Academy will hold its annual Earth Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the school, 1301 W. University Ave.

The free event is open to the public and will feature environmental games, live music by Terry and the Zydeco Bad Boys, arts and crafts, a fun jump, rock wall, canoe rides and dissecting demonstrations.

The academy offers students a chance to learn more about plants and animals and how they work together to create an ecosystem. Earth Day guests will have an opportunity to tour the academy’s outdoor classroom and learn more about the academy’s hands-on approach to learning.

SLCC extends hours for student services

LAFAYETTE — South Louisiana Community College has extended hours for its student services offices at its campuses this week to accommodate student registration needs for the shortened “Maymester” and summer sessions.

Staff will be available from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at its campuses in Lafayette, Abbeville, Crowley, New Iberia, Opelousas, St. Martinville and Ville Platte.

Maymester classes start May 15 and end June 6. The summer semester begins June 10 and ends Aug. 2.
