Late-season trophy

Gavin Barton doesn’t have to wait for all the other hunters in his class at South Live Oak Elementary for stories about their exploits during the season, because he has his own after taking this 10-point, 190-pound buck on a hunt in central Louisiana with his dad, Corey. The 9-year-old from Watson, in a stand on one of the coldest mornings of the season, watched the buck move near a food plot at 8 a.m., and was patient enough to wait on the just-right shot he took with his .243-caliber rifle from 140 yards. It was his first whitetail. With the season winding down, hunters are advised to check out the proposed 2018-2019 season dates for both resident game and migratory birds and can make public comment during a statewide series of hearings and at the March 1 Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission meeting in Baton Rouge.

Public comment will be accepted through March 1 to Tommy Tuma, Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries, 2000 Quail Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70898. Phone (225) 765-2349. Email: ttuma@wlf.la.gov.
