LAKE CHARLES — The Comeaux High volleyball team proved unable to take down Barbe as it suffered a sweep defeat on the road —25-22, 25-18, 25-16 — in a match with big implications for the Division I, District 2 title.

The defeat put the Spartans (18-14, 6-2 in district play) two games behind Barbe (24-9, 8-0) in league play, all but clinching the district title for the Buccaneers.

“(Barbe) is just our arch-nemesis,” Comeaux coach Kristen Fabacher said. “We can’t seem to get past them, but we will one day.”

Comeaux started in promising fashion, jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the first set and forcing Barbe to call time.

The Bucs battled back out nd tied the set at eight points apiece, but the Spartans re-extended their lead with another big run, taking a 16-11 lead, forcing Barbe to call time again.

Barbe once again fought back, and this time went ahead 21-20 for its first lead of the set, one it never relinquished on its way to a 25-22 first-set victory.

From there, the Bucs took control as the Spartans failed to gain a lead in a set for the remainder of the match.

The roles were reversed in the second set, as Barbe jumped out to a 6-2 lead. The Spartans battled back, tying the set at 10 apiece, but the Bucs responded with a 10-3 run that put them up 20-13 on their way to a 25-18 victory.

The third set played out much like the second, with Barbe scoring the first five points and the Spartans battling back to tie it at seven points apiece. But again, the Bucs proved to be too much as they consistently built their lead and finally put the Spartans away with a set-ending 10-3 run for the 25-16 victory.

Fabacher said her team wanted more from this match than just a shot at a district championship.

“They might have won (district) anyway, but it’s also a pride issue,” Fabacher said. “We want to beat them and know that we can. I know that we’re just as good as them. I think mentally we just have to stay a little tougher. We’re working on that, and playing teams like this is going to help us in the playoffs.”

The Spartans will look to bounce back Tuesday when they return to Comeaux for their final home game of the regular season.
