Grace Morgan’s big week started on Wednesday when she signed to play volleyball next season at Rice.
It continued on Thursday as she led Notre Dame to a 3-0 victory over Riverside Academy in the quarterfinals of the Division IV playoffs at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.
“It was a relief to get the signing over with so I could put my complete focus on the tournament,” said Morgan.
Morgan finished with 12 kills and six blocks for Notre Dame (32-8).
“She was dominant,” said Notre Dame coach Tara Young.
Now she is two wins away from making it a perfect week. Notre Dame, the No. 3 seed, plays No. 2 seed Hannan in Friday’s 10 a.m. semifinal. The championship match is set for Saturday.
Not bad for a team that didn’t even make it to the Pontchartrain Center last season.
“I was very sad last year,” Morgan said. “But it gave me motivation to come back this year and do even better. Last year was like a growing season.”
Sammi Leger had 28 kills and Mackenzie Habetz added 20 digs for the Pioneers.
Riverside finished 25-15.
Pope John Paul II 3, Newman 0: In a rematch of the Division IV state championship game from a year ago, the Jaguars (37-2) easily dispatched Newman in three games, 25-13, 25-19 and 25-6.
Milayne Danna led PJP with 29 assists. Julia Nelson had 11 assists for Newman.
Hannan 3, Episcopal 0: Sophomore Hailey Cabeceiras had 18 kills and Tatum Ballard had 29 assists as the Hawks won easily over Episcopal in the quarterfinals.
Sacred Heart 3, John Curtis 1: The Cardinals dropped the first game then rallied to take the next three to oust the Patriots.
Sacred Heart (30-10), the No. 4 seed, advances to Friday’s 10 a.m. semifinal to play top-seed Pope John Paul II.
Curtis finished 29-16.
