Turns out the third time was the charm for Welsh.
Playing in the school’s third state championship game, the top-seeded Greyhounds (13-1) broke out to a 31-0 halftime lead en route to a 38-26 over St. Helena (12-3) Friday afternoon in the 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Class 2A state championship game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Welsh took advantage of three turnovers in the first half.
Welsh led 3-0 on a 40-yard field goal by Trevor Lopez.
The Greyhounds' first touchdown came when Da’Ren Zeno caught the first of his two touchdown passes from Zach Hayes, a 28-yard strike to make it 10-0. Later in the quarter Hayes caught a 1-yard touchdown pass, and then hit Alec Iguess for a 13-yard score before the greyhounds finished off the half with a 22-yard scoring strike to Zeno.
St. Helena was without its leading rusher and one of its leading passers Aaron Hurst, who was unable to play after breaking a bone in his neck in their semifinal win a week ago.
The Hawks scored their first points in the third quarter when Javor DaTroy Hurst scored from a yard out.
Welsh had previously played for state championships in 1989 and 1992.
