LSU’s football players’ lounge has a new name: the Mathieu Players’ Lounge.
The room is being named after former LSU defensive back and current Arizona Cardinals star Tyrann Mathieu, according to documents. The LSU Board of Supervisors must approve the renaming of the room at its meeting next Friday.
The players’ lounge is located in the football operations center and is just a few months away from a facelift. Mathieu donated $1 million to the program last fall, funds that will go to the renovation of the football complex, specifically the lounge.
After the 2017 season, crews will begin renovating several aspects of the operations building, including coaches’ offices, the players’ lounge, locker room and training room. Coaches will have to work from temporary offices in trailers for several months, athletic director Joe Alleva said. The renovations, including the addition of a nutrition center, are expected to last through the 2018 season.
Nicknamed the “Honey Badger,” Mathieu, a New Orleans native, joined his Tigers and Cardinals teammate, Patrick Peterson, in making a $1 million donation to the football program. LSU’s weight room is named after Peterson and local businessman Dave Roberts, who contributed $1 million to Peterson’s family fund.
