The inviting Goodwood Place cottage at 6363

Esplanade Drive – built in 1956 – still has much of its original material, including narrow oak plank floors and beautiful floor-to-ceiling wood windows. An Eduardo Jenkins landscape completes the picture in this great old Baton Rouge neighborhood. In fact, the landscaping and beautiful outdoor spaces are two reasons the current owner hates to leave.

A brick-lined driveway circles in front of the home, which is surrounded by shade trees. A wide brick front porch leads to the foyer hall, which is where the old wood floors begin.

windows. An old swinging door leads to the kitchen. Swinging doors e_SEnD common “back in the day” e_SEnD are making a comeback. T hey were and still are an attractive and utilitarian way to get from the kitchen into the dining room and back.

The old oak floors continue in the kitchen, which is updated and has a sitting area at one end. There is an exit from the sitting room to the rear brick courtyard, as well as a window dressed in plantation shutters.

The living room has more wood floors and a wall of windows across the back, affording a nice view of the Eduardo Jenkins courtyard. More than 40 lights of glass make up the windows and exit door to the courtyard. A big masonry fireplace with a mantle trimmed in dentil molding is on the left wall.

Back in the 50s, builders used hallways to get to the living spaces of homes, and hallways are often seen as wasted interior space. But this hallway leading to the master suite is an exception; it’s floored in the same old oak, and it’s an attractive way to reach the living quarters.

There is a full bath on the right, a big playroom (possibly a bedroom) with a window seat on the left, and two more bedrooms before you get to the master suite.

The carpeted master bedroom has French doors to a private deck with a brick spa. The spa is enclosed by a lockable security fence, and water pours from three lions’ mouths into the spa.

The master bath is opulent, with two custom vanities, a corner glass-block shower and wood floors. A beautiful slipper tub is below more glass blocks.

A U-shaped master closet is very large and has a 15-drawer dresser as well as lots of cabinetry and hanging space. The closet has a second door that opens near the master bedroom entrance, not far from the laundry room.

A second closet means the man of the house gets his own closet as well, but it is smaller than hers.

Out back, the home really shines. Besides the private spa, a large brick and concrete courtyard with a fountain separates the house from a big, climate-controlled recreation/great room. This detached room has a vaulted ceiling with exposed wood beams, stained concrete floors, a wet bar, a half bath and a masonry fireplace.

There’s also a big storage room behind a covered porch at one end of the courtyard.

Underground drainage keeps things dry, there’s a green space on the other side of the spa, and a privacy fence surrounds it all.
