LSU Police arrested a 40-year-old man in the burglary of a campus vending machine.

The campus police were contacted at about 12:30 a.m. and told that someone was breaking into a vending machine at the Howe-Russell Geoscience Complex, according to an LSU Police Department news release. When officers arrived at the building, they saw John Ford Reed Jr., 1805 Stonegate Court, who ran from them, according to LSU police.

When officers caught up with Reed, he started to fight and tried to take an officer’s gun, police said. When he couldn’t get the gun, Reed took the officer’s expandable baton and tried to hit the officer, police said. Reed tried to run away again, but officers caught him.

An officer was treated by paramedics for minor injuries. Reed was treated for minor injuries at Baton Rouge General Mid-City and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of aggravated burglary, disarming a police officer, resisting an officer with force or violence, carrying a concealed weapon by a person convicted of certain felonies, aggravated assault and criminal damage to a coin operated device.
