Just off Old Jefferson Highway south of Highland Road, Willowbrook is a development that is high on amenities and choices, but low on maintenance. This “tastes great, less filling” style is perfect for residents who expect luxury amenities like granite counters, hand-scraped wood floors, stainless kitchen appliances, 10-foot ceilings and two-car garages, but at the same time don’t want the headache of maintaining a large yard.

With zero lot lines, the homes in Willowbrook are all nicely landscaped, but the yards are small and require very little maintenance. All homes are pre-wired for security systems, and the subdivision has a large central lake (stocked) that separates the garden home development from the townhome development. “There’s a one-mile walking trail around the lake, and there’s a fishing pier for all the residents of the townhomes and garden homes,” said Dolly McKenney, the RE-MAX First agent marketing the development. The streets are lined with New Orleans style lamp posts, and the matching mailboxes are black cast iron.

But possibly the best thing about Willowbrook is the prices: Town homes range from $159,900 to $174,900, and garden homes start at $189,900 and go to $245,000 for homes on the lake. Builder packages only are available, McKenney said, adding there are eight models from which to choose.

Willowbrook Garden Homes is being developed by Art Lancaster, with Lancaster Construction. Ronnie Doran, with Doran Enterprises, is developing Willowbrook Townhomes. There are 100 lots in the development, and an additional 30 townhomes are being built, McKenney said. The development is more than half finished, with residents already in some 60 homes, she said. Garden homes all have three bedrooms and two baths, while the town homes have either two or three bedrooms, McKenney said.

Meanwhile, the model home at 17955 Willow Trail Drive is ready for move-in, McKenney said. The tall home has 1,886 square feet of living area, three bedrooms and two and one-half baths. The master bedroom and an office are downstairs, and the two large upstairs bedrooms share a full bath.

The extra long covered stoop leads directly into the living room, where hand-scraped wood is the flooring of choice. This area is immediately recognizable as the heart of the home, where most family activities will take place. An island topped with “Tropical Brown” granite is all that separates the living room from the kitchen, meaning the cook can be included in all activities. The island has a stainless double sink matched by a stainless gas cook top and oven, a microwave and a dishwasher, all by General Electric. A small butler’s counter is to one side, and all the counters are backed by travertine.

In the living room, a fireplace has a wood mantle and ceramic tile surround, and windows are located on either side. A small office is located in front of the living room, meaning there is room for the home’s bedrooms to be large. Four bedrooms wouldn’t fit well in this home, but three bedrooms and a small office are perfectly sized.

The master suite is in back, with a view of the small rear yard and covered concrete porch. Double doors lead to the master bath, where the two vanities are topped with more “Tropical Brown.” There’s a 6-foot soaker tub and a walk-in shower here, and a large single closet has lots of shelving and hanging space. Surprisingly - and conveniently - the master closet has a pocket door leading directly into the laundry room.

Willowbrook currently has lots of couples, singles and downsizers, McKenney said. “They want the quality, but they don’t want the yards.” If that sounds like your lifestyle, McKenney says she will keep the model home open today from 1-5 p.m.

“Willowbrook is one of the best-kept secrets in Baton Rouge,” she said.
