On the eve of the Bayou Classic, Southern and Grambling State’s fraternities and sororities compete in a dance competition, capped by a battle of the bands. The bands march in and perform seated, but they still put on an impressive show.


Melissa Etheridge

On “This is M.E.,” Melissa Etheridge returns with a hint of hip-hop in the production. Her voice remains passion distilled though, and that’s particularly true in concert, where her shows include songs from the whole of her career.

Grammy-winning rapper Common’s songs hearken back to early ’70s, socially conscious R&B. He’s not too removed from his native Chicago to be unaffected by its violence, and he’s close enough to know the whole story and empathize with all who deserve it.
