Sitting on two acres across from the Country Club of Louisiana, the timeless Acadian style home at 17171 Highland Road handles its nearly 6,000-square-feet of living space with warmth and grace. Interior brick and cypress always creates a warm atmosphere, and this home is loaded with both.

Make no mistake; this is a large luxury home. But it also has the warmth and appeal of a cozy country cabin.

Built in 1994, the home stands the test of time with its Spanish charcoal slate roof, yellow pine floors, floor-to-ceiling cypress windows and four private porches overlooking the gunite pool and half-moon shaped brick courtyard in back.

The center screened porch on the first floor is our favorite spot; it has a spiral staircase to the veranda above. The rest of the outdoor spaces are serviced by a Buzz-Off system, and exterior French doors are covered by separate screened French doors to allow cool evening breezes – and not bugs – inside.

While the outdoor spaces of this home are tailor-made made for relaxation and entertaining, the inside is spacious and thoughtfully designed.

The home is almost 20 years old, but it was updated and renovated last year and has everything you’d expect – a wine refrigerator, an ice maker, a whole-home Russ sound system, four A/C units and even an electric dog fence. New materials – granite, marble and travertine – blend harmoniously with cypress, pine and old brick.

White brick entrance walls on Highland Road guard the circular driveway leading to the home’s elevated front porch. A marble entry foyer welcomes guests inside with a massive 30-light chandelier that can be electronically lowered for cleaning or bulb-changing. Wide-planked yellow pine is the primary flooring, and it stretches into the parlor on the left and the formal dining area to the right.

Arches of brick and other material are prominent and consistently used, as are tall baseboards, cypress windows and beautiful dentil crown. The family room, breakfast room and kitchen all share pool views through a transomed wall of tall cypress windows to the back.

Bricks used in the living room fireplace are the same as those on an arched brick wall from the kitchen. Here, a stainless Dacor kitchen appliance package is complemented by 3 cm granite slabs on the counters, bars and island. Included are a 5-burner gas cook top, a dishwasher, an oven and a separate microwave-over-oven combo. A raised-seam copper hood is a nice – and no doubt expensive – touch.

The breakfast area is along a wall of windows that keeps the whole house bright, warm and airy.

Meanwhile, a cypress swinging door leads from the granite butler’s pantry/bar into the formal dining room. Can’t you just picture grandma elbowing her way through the swinging door into the dining room with steaming platters of holiday food?

The master suite is behind the kitchen, separated by a home office that has pine floors and walls of cypress windows on two sides. The glass and views on both sides make the office feel like a breezeway to the master. The master suite has its own private back porch, and the travertine master bath is elegantly appointed.

Upstairs is a bonus room, a bedroom with a full bath and two more bedrooms connected by a Hollywood bath. There’s also access to a wide veranda with great views of the pool, courtyard, a climate-controlled pool house and green spaces in back. A covered outdoor kitchen and living room are on the back side of the pool, which has fountains that splash from a side wall.
