Old Metairie, with its larger homes and spacious yards, yet still close to the city, is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in New Orleans.

This looks like a small house from the outside, but it has six bedrooms and five full baths, for a total of 3,600 square feet. Best of all, though, is the price: it’s only $750,000 – a very reasonable list price for this neighborhood.

“This is a charming Old Metairie home in a great location,” said Margaret Villere Sanders, the listing agent with Latter & Blum Inc. Realtors, who actually grew up in this house. “It has an open floor plan with built-in shelving, large windows looking out to a spacious back yard with an inviting porch and lush landscaping.”

The house opens into an inviting living room with natural wooden floors. Metairie was the first suburb of New Orleans, between the city and Kenner. It was created by alluvial deposits of the Mississippi River system over thousands of years and is physically separated from New Orleans by the 17th Street Drainage Canal. The world’s longest bridge, the twin span, 24-mile long Lake Pontchartrain Causeway connects Metairie to the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain and thousands of commuters take the causeway to work daily.

Metairie is not a city and has no mayor or local government of its own. As part of Jefferson Parish, it is governed by the Jefferson Parish Council. Approximately 160,000 people live in Metairie’s five zip codes (70001, 70002, 70003, 70005 and 70006).

The meaning of the word “Metairie” comes from the French word for farm. It refers to a particular type of French farming relationship where a landowner leases a portion of property to a farmer for 50 percent of the crops grown by the tenant. Metairie Road is still one of the traditional arteries which connect Metairie to the City of New Orleans.

Today, the area surrounding Metairie Road is known as “Old Metairie.” Shops, professional buildings and shopping centers have developed along Metairie Road. Lakeside Shopping Center, one of Louisiana’s oldest and largest shopping malls, is on Causeway Boulevard in the heart of Metairie. Many of Metairie’s night clubs are located in “Fat City,” which was developed as Metairie’s commercial district. The New Orleans Saints’ offices and practice fields and the New Orleans Zephyrs AAA baseball team both are in Metairie.

“Old Metairie continues to be a great alternative to Uptown living by giving its residents more value for their dollar,” said Sanders, “while still being a prime location in the Greater New Orleans area.”
