An inmate who escaped Tuesday night from the Dixon Correctional Institute was caught Wednesday morning 20 yards from a Baptist church near the prison, Dixon Correctional Institute Assistant Warden James Stevens said Wednesday.
Jeremiah Benoit, 33, was caught while running near the Asphodel Baptist Church off La. 68 in East Feliciana Parish, Stevens said.
Stevens said Benoit was caught at 6:30 a.m.
The inmate escaped from the facility about 12 hours earlier at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Stevens said.
Pam Laborde, Department of Public Safety and Corrections communications director, said she did not know how Benoit escaped.
Benoit was serving time for aggravated burglary, escape, and second-degree kidnapping at the prison in Jackson, Laborde said.
