The Lafayette Concert Band, conducted by Gerald Guilbeaux, will open its 2016 season at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, at The Bayou Church, 2234 Kaliste Saloom Road, in Lafayette.

“We are really excited about our new season coming off of one of our best years of ticket sales, and we’re looking to top that figure in 2016,” Guilbeaux said.

He added that season tickets and single concert tickets may be purchased at the door on the day of the opening concert.

The season opens with “Step Up To The Podium,” a concert with members of the band getting an opportunity to conduct their favorite selections giving the audience a wide variety of pieces.

That concert will be followed by a show at Acadian Village on April 10 and the annual Memorial Day Concert at The Bayou Church on Sunday, May 29.

After a summer hiatus the band continues its performances on Oct. 9 and concludes the season with “Christmas Traditions” on Dec. 4.

The Lafayette Concert Band has 80 members.

“We’ve got a wonderful group of fine amateur musicians, many of whom were classically trained and who all love making music together for our audience,” Guilbeaux said. “We are an all-volunteer group that rehearses once a week; we present five concerts a year with music that people recognize and can relate to.”

Entering his 23rd year as conductor of the band, Guilbeaux said the Lafayette Concert Band has been awarded the Sudler Silver Scroll, administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. The Silver Scroll is North America’s most prestigious award for adult Community Bands. The band also has hosted the National Convention of the Association of Concert Bands in Lafayette.
