La Salvadoreña Restaurant opened Monday in the former location of Willy’s Chicken and Waffles at 3285 Nicholson Drive.

The new restaurant is currently in its soft opening phase, offering tostadas, tamales, pupusas, carne asada tacos and a pickled cabbage slaw that goes well with just about anything.

Check out the entire menu. Some dishes, such as the ceviche, should be available by the week’s end. A grand opening has not been planned.

La Salvadoreña started as a string of food trucks, with one setting up on Nicholson, a block or two from the new restaurant, and another on Gardere Lane. Now, with a brick-and-mortar location, the Nicholson Drive truck has temporarily closed. However, the truck at 1345 Gardere Lane will continue operating.

A translator speaking for La Salvadoreña co-owners Lea Romero and Enrique Rodriguez said they wanted to remain close to the area. Willy’s Chicken and Waffles closed this summer after operating for just over a year.

La Salvadoreña will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Business house are 6 a.m.-10 p.m. daily. For more information, visit or call (225) 227-0141.
