Whole Foods to host seafood tastings

Whole Foods Markets will host sea-to-table tastings during Thursdays in October during which guests can tour each store’s seafood department, sample fresh Gulf seafood, taste wine pairings and learn ways to prepare seafood.

Tickets are $25 per person. Sales benefit the Audubon Nature Institute Gulf United for Lasting Fisheries and Louisiana Sea Grant.

One New Orleans store, 5600 Magazine St., will feature chef Alex Harrell from Sylvain preparing baked Louisiana oysters with mustard greens, pickled lemons and bacon, along with pickled Gulf shrimp with chilies and fennel. Chef Eman Loubier from Dante’s Kitchen will make fish in calamari and redfish on the half-shell. Events start at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2. Call (504) 899-9119.

The other New Orleans store, 300 N. Broad St., will feature Liberty’s Kitchen students, chef Kristen Essig from Meauxbar, chef Bart Bell from Crescent Pie & Sausage Co., and redfish courtbouillon and Gulf seafood pie at 6 p.m. Oct. 16. Call (504) 434-3364.

The Metairie location, 3420 Veterans Blvd., will host chef Tenney Flynn from GW Fins and feature sautéed red snapper with spoonbread and jumbo lump crab corn butter, along with sautéed shrimp with mirliton slaw. Chef Anthony Spizale from the New Orleans Marriott Metairie at Lakeway will prepare crispy Gulf oysters and Brussels sprout Caesar salad with Parmigiano-Reggiano and jumbo lump crab cakes with fresh herbs and light crab butter. Deanie’s sets Bucktober fall concert series

Deanie’s Seafood Restaurant & Seafood Market in Bucktown will celebrate local sounds and seafood at its third annual Bucktober fall concert series.

The free outdoor concert series will be held at Deanies, 1713 Lake Ave. in Metairie, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. every Friday in October, and it will feature Deanie’s full menu plus charbroiled oysters grilled to order.

The series will close on Oct. 31 with a Halloween night performance by New Orleans entertainer Vince Vance & The Valiants and free Halloween games and activities for kids.

Sandwich smackdown set for LSU-Auburn day

Southern Living’s Test Kitchen and Cobblestone Bread Co. are bringing a sandwich smackdown to Auburn, Alabama, on Oct. 4 when the LSU Tigers visit. The Test Kitchen’s Robby Melvin will compete against Cobblestone chef Nathan Lippy in the Gay Street Parking Lot in downtown Auburn.

Samples of the chef’s creations will be available, and the audience will be able to vote on their favorite sandwich. Voters will be entered in a contest to win $500.

Southern Living will serve Buffalo chicken meatball sliders and Lippy will prepare a chicken bruschetta with mozzarella and balsamic glaze.

Gumbo cook-off set in New Iberia

The Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce will host the 25th annual World Championship Gumbo Cook-off Oct. 10-Oct. 12 on Main Street in downtown New Iberia.

The three-day event also will include Cajun food; music from Leroy Thomas, Chubby Carrier, Side Show, Beausoleil, Geno Delafose and Roddie Romero; a Friday night showing of “The Incredibles;” and Sunday’s gumbo cook-off.

More than 100 teams will cook all kinds of gumbo Sunday. Visitors can try as many types of gumbo as they choose. Events are free, but visitors may not bring ice chests or pets. Visit iberiachamber.org/gumbo-cookoff.
