The drop in daytime temperatures and Biblical rain brought what feels like fall, but continue to monitor rainfall and water when needed to keep plants, including trees, healthy.

LSU AgCenter horticulturists advise us to water pecan trees if a week goes by without a good rain. Drought can mean the trees drop green pecans. Rain from last week’s tropical storm helped restore soil moisture but the ground was very dry, especially in west central and north Louisiana.

FERTILIZING: Don’t apply nitrogen fertilizer after September. Fertilizing trees, shrubs, lawns and ground covers with nitrogen during the fall can mean less hardy plants over the winter.
