NORTHWESTERN STUDENTS WIN SINGING COMPETITION: Five Northwestern State University students won first-place honors at the annual Louisiana competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing this month at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Eleven students under voice faculty Patrick Dill, Michael Rorex and Terrie Sanders placed in eight categories.

First-place finishers were Maria Hefte, of Covington, in freshmen women;Kallie Stephenson, of West Monroe, in senior women;Garrett Watson, of Cleburne, Texas, in senior men;Rebekah Hall, of Austin, Texas, in student adult; and Leonard Harris, of Baton Rouge, in freshman/sophomore musical theater.

Four students received second-place honors, including Harris, Justin Lincecum, of Alexandria, in freshmen men;Emma Harrison, of Thibodaux, in sophomore women; and Beau Voinché,of Marksville, in sophomore men.

Third-place finishers were Hannah Street, of Baton Rouge, in sophomore women;Denzel Dawson, of Baton Rouge, in sophomore men; and Hannah Williams, of Baton Rouge, in freshman/sophomore musical theater.


LSU CADET WINS MARSHALL AWARD: Army Cadet Robert E. Brown of LSU has received the George C. Marshall Award during an awards ceremony at the Marshall Center, Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va.

The award is named in honor of General of the Army George C. Marshall, who served in World War II as the Army chief of staff and in the post-war era served as secretary of state and secretary of defense.

The award is presented annually to the most outstanding senior Army Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets in military science studies and leadership values in each battalion at host universities or colleges. Top cadets from each cadet battalion represent the very best of a highly selective organization. This is a national award and the highest award an ROTC cadet can receive.

Brown is the son of Carla and Robert Brown, of Baton Rouge, and grandson of Emmett Brown, of Prairieville. He graduated in 2009 from Catholic High School.

COLEMAN COMPLETES BASIC: Army Pvt. April N. Coleman has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Coleman is a 2012 graduate of Istrouma High School.

LAWRENCE COMPLETES BASIC:Army National Guard Pfc. Obea D. Lawrence has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. Lawrence is the son of Zellatesia and Obea Robinson, of Baton Rouge, and is a 2012 graduate of Scotlandville Magnet High School.

HANNAH GRADUATES FROM ENGINEER COURSE: Marine Corps Pfc. Zachary T. Hannah, son of Kelly Schmidt, of Gonzales, and Scott Hannah, of Crestview, Fla., recently graduated from the Marine Corps Basic Combat Engineer Course at Marine Corps Engineer School, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Hannah received instruction in the fundamentals of engineering support for combat units.

Hannah is a 2011 graduate of Riverview High School of Riverview, Fla., and joined the Marine Corps in July 2012.
