Singer Mary J. Blige received more than just the applause and adoration from hundreds of fans when she performed on Valentine's evening in Baton Rouge.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome announced Thursday that she gave the singer known for her soul and hip-hop tracks a key to the city as well.

"Last night, I presented Mary J. Blige with a Key to the City for being a woman of inspiration, transformation, and empowerment," Broome posted on her Facebook page. "She is a defining voice of the contemporary music era."


Blige performed Thursday evening at the Raising Cane's River Center. She said in a recent interview with The Advocate that the Valentine's performance was special "because you get to see love on that day."

Blige has won nine Grammy Awards and was also recently nominated for an Oscar Award for best supporting actress in the Netflix period drama "Mudbound." Blige also received a second 2018 Oscar nomination for best original song.
