Amid flames and smoke, the Krewe of Romany, one of the oldest ladies krewes in Baton Rouge, welcomed members and guests to a “Disco Inferno,” Romany’s Studio 54, for its 64th Mardi Gras ball on Feb. 2.

Opening the evening at the Baton Rouge River Center was Ball Captain Amy Harris Varnado, attended by her daughter Mary-Hannah Varnado.

Smoke and lasers heralded the arrival of Queen Romany LXIV Dara Sheree Hughes, daughter of Dr. H. David and Sheree Hughes and a student at LSU. She was accompanied by King Romany LXIV Travis Shawn Fabre, the husband of krewe member Ashley Day Fabre.

Attending the royal couple were pages Abby Schwartz, daughter of Paul and Tara Schwartz; Bella McGucken, daughter of Matt and Amy McGucken; Camille Nyboer and Parker Nyboer, daughter and son of Dr. Scott and Karen Nyboer; Edward “Ace” Sharp, son of Jack Sharp and grandson of Jean Sharp; and Austin Anding, son of Greg Anding and Tanya Toups and grandson of Mike and Jenny Anding.

Maids were presented continuing the tableau theme.

Representing “It’s Raining Men” was Courtney Alexandra Vidrine, daughter of Kenneth W. and Annette Vidrine. The Comeaux High School in Lafayette student was sponsored by krewe member Katy Harris.

Escorted by her father, Blair Spencer, Emily Claire Spencer portrayed “Kung Fu Fighting.” She is the daughter of krewe member Kristin Spencer and a senior at Parkview Baptist.

Sydney Morgan Smith and her father, Chris Smith, arrived representing “Hot Stuff.” The Parkview Baptist senior was sponsored by krewe member Maria Parks.

Representing “Car Wash,” Allison Teal George was escorted by her father, Max George. The daughter of krewe member Sherry George is a senior at Parkview Baptist.

Mallory Anne Breaux, accompanied by her father, Earl Breaux, took her bow as “Boogie Fever.” She is the daughter of krewe member Debbie Breaux and a senior at Parkview Baptist.

Portraying “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” and escorted by her father was Morgan Marie McGraw, daughter of Tommy and Renee Barber. The LSU freshman was sponsored by the ball captain’s special adviser, Peggy Moore.

Costumed couples and ladies in the krewe entertained guests with choreographed dance numbers by Jerisse Bolton Grantham.

Court costumes and back pieces were designed by Todd Averette, who also executed the back pieces. The court costumes were executed by Loretta Shelton.

Following the tableau, ball guests continued the celebration with music by Louisiana Red.

Master of ceremonies was Robert Chandler; stage, lighting and video were executed by Tony Arieux with American Audio Visual. Sound was provided by Bill Bennett with Sound South, and photography was provided by Layne Photography.

The theme logo was designed by Jay Watson, the ball captain’s cousin.
