Each week The Advocate asks a different “quiz taker” for his or her current favorites in pop culture.

QUIZ TAKER: Stephen Hollinger, 43, senior designer, R & D Consulting, Inc.

Hollinger will compete Sunday in the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco, swimming an ice-cold 1.5 miles from Alcatraz Island, then cycling 18 miles through the Presidio and running an eight-mile trail through the Golden Gate Recreational Area.

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: “My music choice really depends on what I am doing and my mood. Right now I have been putting Jack White, The Avett Brothers and Mumford and Sons in rotation the most, but still like to throw in some old school R&B.”

WHAT I’M READING: “Books, nothing really. Magazines: Wired and Travel. Newspapers: The Advocate, of course.”

WHAT I’M WATCHING: “‘Person of Interest,’ ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘Big Bang Theory.’”

WHERE I’M SURFING (ON THE INTERNET): “I hate to admit it, but Facebook, Yahoo and CNN.”

WHAT’S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? “Chef Ramsay’s ‘Hell’s Kitchen.’ I watch it and wonder why after it is over, then watch again next week.”

How did you become a triathlete?

“I became involved in triathlon through my wife. She signed up for the local RocketChix race and asked me if I would train with her. We started this healthy lifestyle journey together, and it has been fantastic. We have made some great friends through our running group at Varsity Sports.

What will be the toughest challenge you face at the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon?

“Everyone talks about the swim being the tough part. I am excited to swim in the bay. I plan on stopping and taking a couple of pictures from the bay. For me the challenge will be the hills through the Presidio and Golden Gate Park.”
