Canning competition set Aug. 27 at market
The Red Stick Farmers Market will hold its first canning competition on Aug. 27 and home cooks have until noon Aug. 20 to enter, market spokeswoman Darlene Adams Rowland said.
The contest is being held in conjunction with the Jarden Home Brands “Discover You Can” summer canning education program.
Home cooks are invited to enter their favorite pickle, preserves, canned vegetables or fruits, jams or jellies in the contest, which will be judged by experts in the home-canning field on general appearance, color, texture and flavor.
All entries must be displayed in clear Ball canning jars. There is no limit to the number of entries, and a contest form must be submitted for each entry.
All jars must be sealed with self-sealing lids and include rings. No wax is allowed.
All entries must have a label attached stating the name of the product, date of processing (must be within 12 months of the competition) and contestant’s phone number. Do not put name on label.
Turn entries in at the hospitality booth of the Red Stick Farmers Market, 7249 Perkins Road, from 8 a.m. to noon today, or at the market held 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in downtown Baton Rouge on Fifth Street between Main and North streets.
Winners will be announced at the Pickling Party on Aug. 27. The entry form and complete contest rules can be found at http://www.redstickfarmersmarket.org.
