Rocket science and barbecuing — Howard Conyers is a master of both.

The NASA engineer, who's made New Orleans home, takes his skill at the latter to the Cooking Channel on Tuesday for an episode of the series "Man Fire Food." In the episode, aptly titled "Out of this World BBQ," Conyers and host Roger Mooking will go whole hog, digging out a pit and building a raging fire in a burn barrel to cook the animal.

Conyers, originally from Manning, South Carolina, tests rocket engines at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. His family has been cooking whole hogs for generations.

"Man Fire Food" airs at 8 p.m. on the Cooking Channel (cable Channel 231 in Baton Rouge and Lafayette, cable Channel 356 in New Orleans).
