Cable television got a taste of Baton Rouge on Monday night when Kevin Gates, a rapper from the Capital City, performed two songs on "Conan."
Gates performed "2 Phones" and "Really Really" from his Atlantic Records debut, "Islah," which was released in February.
The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in its first week, with nearly 100,000 units sold. "Islah" has also been named one of the better rap albums of the year with Pitchfork Media and Rolling Stone calling it a triumph.
Gates' rise to fame in rap music came from his relentless release of mixtapes, starting in 2006. In 2013, he released a mixtape titled "The Luca Brasi Story," which was downloaded nearly half a million times. That mixtape was called "the best rap-related thing" by Spin Magazine at the time.
