Claire Fontenot received a decorated pair of garden boots, garden gloves and a standing ovation in recognition of more than 12,000 volunteer hours she has donated to area venues since her 2001 graduation from the Master Gardener program at the organization’s Aug. 5 get-together at the LSU Botanic Gardens Pavilion at Burden Gardens. The event was organized by at-large executive board members Kerry Hawkins and Maggie Jolly.

Fontenot was also among those honored for volunteering 1,000 hours or more over the past year. Her fellow honorees included Debbie Corbo, Sherry Eubanks and John Goeckel.

Receiving awards for volunteering between 500-999 hours were Skippy Berner, John Buckley, Kitty Bull, Cam Eversberg, Vanessa Green, Margaret Humble and Kerry Hawkins.

Receiving awards for volunteering between 100-499 hours were Jeff Calmes, Rose’y Green, Margaret Hawkins, Kay Heinrich, John Hough, Missy Jones. Johanna Roose and Jolly.

And recognized for volunteering 50 hours were Bridget Brister, Willie Brister, Cathy Mayer, Susan Teddlie and Marie Varnes.

Also honored at the event were veteran master gardeners Pat Brignac and Barbara Quirk, 15-year members; Laura Deavers and Helen Day, 10-year members; and Bahin Leonard, Eversberg, Vanessa Green, Georgeann Chaffee, Bonnie Babin, Linda Bush, Brenda Baumgardner and Sydney Snyder, five-year members.

The awards were presented by President Mary Tauzin and mistress of ceremonies Donna Montgomery.

Membership kickoff

The Baton Rouge chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants held its membership kickoff reception at the Renaissance Center July 17. Officers of the organization are President Gwen Johnson, Vice President Achilles Williams, Secretary Kearia McCants and Treasurer Cassandra Woods.
