The inaugural 'Boxing With the Badge,' the first of three summer youth camps linking area youth with Baton Rouge Police Dept. officers, was held last week for kids ages 8-13. It was the first of three camps, with basketball and soccer to come, funded by a Resiliency in Communities After Stress and Trauma (ReCAST) program grant, secured by East Baton Rouge Parish after the 2016 protests in the wake of an officer-involved shooting, a deadly ambush of law enforcement officers and extensive floods. Mentoring to instill a 'don't give up' mindset in the kids was another aspect of the program.
