A ceremony was held at the site of the former Tezcuco Plantation, now Shell Convent Refinery property, Saturday, March 24, 2018, honoring the over 1,000 enslaved people and plantation workers believed to beĀ  buried at the nearby Monroe Plantation Cemetery and Bruslie Plantation Cemetery, both of which are also on Shell property. The two burial sites in Ascension parish were discovered five years ago, and Shell has been working with the River Road African American Museum to mark and preserve the two cemeteries and allow descendants onto the property to pay their respects.
