A Baton Rouge man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Thursday in the 2007 killing and robbery of a Folsom-area man at the Days Inn on Reiger Road.

Michael Gillam, 41, was charged with second-degree murder, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter in May to the Sept. 8, 2007, shooting death of John Morgan, a 53-year-old construction worker.

Family members of the victim on Thursday called the killing a “senseless act’’ that changed their lives forever, and asked state District Judge Tony Marabella to impose the maximum sentence.

Manslaughter could result in a sentence of 40 years in prison, but Gillam’s plea agreement called for a sentencing range of 10 to 20 years.

Marabella said Gillam blamed his action on drug abuse, claiming he was on a crack cocaine binge at the time of the crime.

Gillam apologized to Morgan’s family.

A surveillance-camera photo from a nearby convenience store and phone tips to Crime Stoppers led deputies to arrest Gillam.
