More than 80 sixth-grade students from the Episcopal School helped clean up the lake at BREC’s Greenwood Community Park in Baker on Wednesday as part of a community service project.

With assistance from BREC employees and the Youth Wetlands Project at the LSU AgCenter, the students worked out of canoes and small boats to clean trash out of the lake. They also collected macroinvertebrates such as insects, worms, snails, and crawfish from the mud and water to study in class; removed plants from the lake path; and planted seedlings to beautify the area, BREC spokeswoman Cheryl Michelet said in a news release.

LSU AgCenter wetlands education agent Mindy Brooks told the students that the macroinvertebrates could be used to gauge the pollution level of the water.
