Approximately 400 Boy Scouts, family members, Scout leaders and other volunteers placed American flags at about 13,000 grave sites to honor deceased U.S. military veterans. In 1947, World War II veteran James Jacocks, of Zachary, began the annual tradition of leading Boy Scouts and their parents in placing American flags on grave sites at the cemetery. He last led the event in 2007, and since then, the event has been led by Troop 472 and Avondale District of the Istrouma Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
