Forty-two quilters from across the state met July 18 in Baton Rouge to stitch up a few patriotic quilts as part of a sew day organized by area quilt groups.

By the end of the day, five quilt tops had been created. Once completed, all the quilts will be presented to local veterans and military service members.

Precut fabric kits for sewing the assorted quilt blocks in stars and stripes patterns were provided for the day’s activities, along with lunch and door prizes, by River City Quilt Guild, The Wasted Women’s Bee and The Giving Quilt Inc., co-sponsors of the event.

Through a 2015 National Quilting Association grant, four Quilts of Valor quilts were completed earlier this year and donated to special guest Roxanne Brown, Louisiana Quilts of Valor state coordinator, to award to Louisiana veterans. One of these quilts was awarded to an Air Force veteran volunteering at the sew day event.
