Judy, the Asian elephant that died recently at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo, died from chronic gastrointestinal irritation, a side effect from arthritis treatment, according to the animal’s necropsy results.

“The drug that was the most effective in her treatment also had side effects which included gastrointestinal irritation. To reduce the side effects, the treatment drug’s dosage was reduced to the lowest possible level that would still provide the needed relief,” zoo veterinarian Gordon Pirie said in a news release Friday. “So, in addition to treating the arthritis, we also treated her for the side effects.”

Judy, who was 46 when she died, had been treated for arthritis for 29 years with medication and physical therapy.
