Zachary police on Friday arrested a 20-year-old man accused in a drive-by shooting that resulted in a woman suffering a gunshot wound to her back.

Tavares D. Smith of 2214 Motel Lane, Jackson, is accused of firing five gunshots on Wednesday into an Angus Drive residence occupied by a woman he knew, her spouse and their two children, ages 4 and 10, according to a police report.

The woman told police she was sitting on her couch when she heard gunshots and soon realized she had been shot in the back. She also told police she recently met the alleged shooter on a social media website while she was “separated from her spouse,” the report says.

When she and her spouse reconciled a few days ago, the woman told Smith she didn’t want to be contacted by him anymore, the report says.

During their investigation, police reviewed threatening text messages allegedly sent by Smith to the woman. Also, a description of the vehicle seen fleeing the scene of the shooting matched the description of a vehicle known to be driven by Smith, the report says.

Smith was booked into Parish Prison on four counts of attempted first-degree murder and a count of assault by drive-by shooting. His bail was set at $350,000, prison records show.
