Some people may have been in a rush to “deck the halls” before Christmas Day, but the city-parish is already preparing for the time when the ornaments come down and Christmas trees are no longer lighting up windows.
East Baton Rouge residents can recycle their Christmas trees, gift boxes and even wrapping paper once the holiday season has finished. City-parish residents are being asked to place their Christmas trees on the curb between Jan. 11 and Jan. 23, and Republic Services will pass through each neighborhood for one pickup during the two-week period.
Baker and Zachary residents will not be part of the city-parish Christmas tree recycling program. They, and other residents who do not want to wait for the recycling window, can drop off their trees at a handful of collection sites starting Saturday and continuing through Jan. 30.
The drop-off collection sites are:
Independence Park, 7500 Independence Blvd.
Highland Road Park, 14024 Highland Road
Kathy Drive Park, 1801 Kathy Drive off O’Neal Lane by Team Toyota
Flannery Road Park, 801 S. Flannery Road
LSU, Skip Bertman Drive in lot across from Vet School
Before dropping off trees or placing them on curbs, the city-parish is requesting that people remove all tinsel, lights, ornaments and other decorations. Trees should also be placed separately from woody waste or other loose trash.
“The trees will be collected in rear loaders or brush trucks during the Christmas tree recycling curbside collection dates,” said the city-parish Recycling Director Susan Hamilton in a statement. “The Christmas trees are then delivered to Natural Resources Recovery Inc., the city-parish woody-waste recycling contractor, where they are mulched for beneficial reuse.”
People can also recycle cardboard gift boxes inside of recycling carts or next to them, as long as the boxes are folded and flattened. Wrapping paper and nonglossy gift bags can also be recycled, but tissue paper and foil paper will not be accepted.
People who normally would have their other recyclable material picked up on Friday will have their makeup day on Saturday. The makeup day for New Year’s Day recycling pickup is Jan. 2.
Apartment tenants, business owners and others who want to drop off recyclable material can do so 24/7 starting Jan. 1 at Progressive Waste Solutions, 7923 Tom Drive.
