East Baton Rouge Parish School Board District 4 incumbent Tarvald Smith has won re-election for his fourth term, defeating his challenger Robert Maxie Sr.

Smith has 6,243 votes, or 60 percent, while Maxie has 4,148 votes, or 40 percent, according to unofficial results from the Secretary of State website. School Board Vice President Smith was first appointed to the board in 2004 and was re-elected in 2007 and 2010 in unopposed races. He said there have been divisions on the board but that those have been caused by the influence of Baton Rouge Area Chamber on certain members.

U.S. Navy veteran Maxie said he decided to run this year partly because of what he’s observed with five of his six children in public school and partly because as a substance abuse counselor he’s seen how many of his patients have dropped out of school.
