Volunteers at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Baton Rouge spent part of Easter Sunday dishing up hot meals and handing out children’s Easter baskets to 733 of the capital city’s homeless and needy.

Michael Acaldo, president and CEO of the society in Baton Rouge, said the roughly 150 volunteers also served at a free Easter store outside the society’s dining room to distribute socks, shoes, clothing and other useful items.

“It was a fantastic event,” said Acaldo, who added thunderstorms forecast for Sunday afternoon held off until after the last of the diners had finished up their meals. “We were able to offer something that helped fulfill the needs to people that desperately need the help.”
