The Highland Club Apartments on Jefferson Highway is set to start a nearly $5.2 million expansion that will add 32 units to the development, improve the pool area and add walking tracks around the property.
Work on the complex at 17505 Jefferson Highway is set to begin Dec. 1 and Block Construction of Baton Rouge is handling the improvements, said Ed Kramer, Highland Club developer. He said the work is expected to take “right at a year.”
The 32 new units will be in a “premier building” and a little more luxurious and modern, Kramer said. One- and two-bedroom units in the new building will rent for between $1,100 and $1,350 a month, about $150 more than the 242 existing units in Highland Club, he said.
Many of the amenities in Highland Club will be updated, including expanding the pool area, adding gas grills and fire pits, putting in new decking, opening up a dog park and connecting all of the sidewalks in the property.
“You’ve got to keep adding the latest and greatest things if you want to continue to get the higher rents,” Kramer said.
The first phase of Highland Club opened in 2004. The occupancy rate in the complex is between 96 and 97 percent, Kramer said.
