Lafayette-based MidSouth Bancorp Inc. reported its second-quarter earnings rose to $3.9 million, or 34 cents per share, compared to $3.3 million, or 29 cents per share, a year ago.

President and Chief Executive Officer C.R. Cloutier said strong loan growth and improvements in efficiency and operating earnings helped drive the second-quarter results.

The majority of the loan growth was in the commercial loan portfolio, along with solid growth in the commercial real estate and consumer loan portfolios, according to MidSouth.

MidSouth had $1.22 billion in total loans as of June 30, compared to $1.12 billion in loans a year earlier.
