Salsbury’s Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram has filed a site plan to move its auto dealership a few miles south on Airline Highway.
The dealership will relocate from its spot between Florida Boulevard and Interstate 12 to a location near the intersection with Barringer-Foreman Road.
Plans were filed Thursday with the city-parish Planning Commission for the car dealership, which sells new and used vehicles. The commission is scheduled to vote on the site plan at its Nov. 16 meeting.
Frank Lopinto, general manager of the auto dealership, said there’s no timetable yet for when the new Salsbury’s will open. Lopinto said he applied for a wetlands permit with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on March 15 and hasn’t heard anything yet about it. “We can’t even cut a blade of grass until we get that permit from the Corps,” he said.
Salsbury’s bought the 12.2-acre site a year ago for $3.5 million. At the time, Lopinto said it was an investment for a future dealership. “That was the only vacant property on Airline Highway that we could get that had the space we needed,” he said. “Things fell in line right there.”
Plans for the new dealership call for constructing three buildings on the property, with a total of nearly 64,400 square feet of covered space.
“We’ll have a little bit more room,” Lopinto said. Salsbury’s currently sits on 8 acres. Plans are to sell the existing dealership after the move, he said.
The additional space will allow the dealership to have a bigger shop. About 105 people currently work at Salsbury’s; that number will be bumped up by five to 10 employees once the dealership moves, Lopinto said.
Salsbury’s has been in business since 1986, when Dallas Salsbury, a New Orleans car dealer, bought Prevost Dodge in Baton Rouge. The company is now headed up by Leah Salsbury Duval, Dallas Salsbury’s daughter.
In June, Salsbury’s bought the Baton Rouge Chrysler Jeep franchise from Brian Harris. It then renamed its dealership from Salsbury’s Dodge City to Salsbury’s Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.
