First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Dec. 7 increased to 3,159 from 1,850 for the previous week, which was shortened by the Thanksgiving holiday.

For the comparable week a year earlier there were 3,516 initial claims, the state’s labor department said.

The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile measure of claims, increased to 2,557 from the previous week’s total of 2,444.

Continued unemployment claims for the week ending Dec. 7 increased to 24,160 compared to 22,425 the previous week.

The four-week moving average for such claims increased to 22,957 from the previous week’s average of 22,539.
