Drought assistance

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency’s deadline for the Drought Assistance Program, Livestock Forage Disaster Program in Livingston and East Baton Rouge parishes for livestock producers is Jan. 30.

All 64 Louisiana parishes are qualified for the program based on the U.S. Drought Monitor, officials said.

The Livestock Assistance Program provides compensation to eligible livestock producers that have suffered grazing losses for covered livestock on land that is native or improved pastureland with permanent vegetative cover. To be eligible, producers must have purchased Noninsured Assistance Program coverage for grazing land or meet the definition of socially disadvantaged, limited resource, or beginning farmer.

A beginning farmer is one who has not owned or operated a farm or ranch for more than 10 years, officials said.

For information, contact the Farm Service Agency Office at (225) 664-1430, extension 2. The office is at 2191 Tower Drive, Denham Springs.
