A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday afternoon in a head-on collision with an SUV on U.S. 190 west of Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish, State Police said.
Wednesday morning, troopers identified the rider as 51-year-old Morgan Ellsworth Welch, of Shreveport.
He was driving west but drifted into the eastbound lane and crashed into an Isuzu Trooper driven by Robert Len Jones Jr., 23, of Springfield, shortly after 3:30 p.m., said Trooper Dustin Dwight, a spokesman for Troop L.
The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet but still suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office, Dwight said.
He said there are no charges pending against Jones, the driver of the SUV. A breath test showed no alcohol on Jones’ breath, though a blood sample will be sent to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis, Dwight said.
Police are still investigating what might have caused the motorcyclist to drift into oncoming traffic and what other factors might have contributed to the fatal wreck, Dwight said.
