James Linden Hogg, 15, of Prairieville, was the winner of the 2015 Louisiana State Fiddle Championship held in Magale Recital Hall at Northwestern State University as part of the 36th annual Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival held July 17-18.
“I am very humbled to receive this prestigious Louisiana State Fiddle Championship award from the Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival, as there were many excellent fiddle players that represented Louisiana proudly,” Hogg said. “I really enjoyed playing onstage with some great fiddle players.”
Hogg won the 21-and-under championship division.
As the new Louisiana State Fiddle champion, Hogg also performed on the main stage in Prather Coliseum during the Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival. In addition to the fiddle, Hogg plays the bagpipes, banjo, penny whistle, military fife, piano, harpsichord, guitar and cello, often playing up to four hours per day.
A former Louisiana National History Day Champion, he said history and music are his passions, and he has recently released a CD titled “The Parting Glass.”
This year’s Fiddle Championship judges included fiddlers Robert “Doc” Chaney, Dennis Elliott and Ron Yule.
