On March 30, the Ascension Parish School Board will ask voters to renew two funding sources for the school district's day-to-day operations and building maintenance needs, a news release said. Two propositions will be on the March 30 ballot. Neither is a new tax, according to the release.
The 10-year, 7.4-mill property tax dedicated to funding general operation costs was created in 1983 as the first local school millage approved by Ascension Parish voters to fund school operations. The tax funds school nursing programs, school bus operations, early childhood and summer school programs, counseling programs, textbooks, libraries, multimedia services, classroom furniture, and band and athletic equipment.
Ascension Parish voters created the 10-year, 2.5-mill property tax dedicated to funding building operations and maintenance in 1994. The tax is used to fund custodial and grounds services, utilities, flood and liability insurance, and general maintenance and repairs.
