Ascension Parish Library’s Teen Book Club for grades six through 12 meets on the third Thursday of every month, and this month’s meeting is at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Galvez branch, 40300 La. 42, in Prairieville.

Teens are not required to read a specific title — just come and discuss the book they’re reading.

Food safety seminar

Barbara Templet, a registered nurse and Louisiana child care health consultant, will present a two-hour food safety seminar at noon Tuesday at the Ascension Parish Library’s Gonzales branch, 708 S. Irma Blvd.

Templet is certified with the state Department of Health and Hospitals.

Day care center staff and child care providers will receive food safety certificates from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals upon completion of the seminar.

Open mic for teens

Talented teens are invited to open mic night at the Dutchtown Branch Library, 13278 La. 73, in Geismar from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday .

Bring 10 minutes of material or two songs to perform in front of a crowd. No registration is required, but time is limited.

Loss and grief group

If you have experienced loss of any kind, there is a support group available to help you through the grieving process, facilitated by the Grief Recovery Center.

The group meets every Thursday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Sister Linda Conference room at St. Elizabeth Hospital, 1125 La. 30, in Gonzales.

Preteens and puberty

“Growing Up: Girls, A Class for Preteen Girls” will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Sister Vernola Conference Room at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

This class for girls ages 9 to 11 and their mothers will help girls understand the physical and emotional changes they will experience as they go through puberty.
