Ascension Parish Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Director Richard Webre will be the featured speaker at the Ascension GOP Roundtable on Aug. 21 at Frank’s Restaurant, 17425 U.S. 61, Prairieville.

The roundtable, sponsored by Ascension Republican Women, starts with registration at 11:30 a.m.

Webre, who served 21 years in the U.S. Army, was hired in 2005. His presentation will focus on preparation for manmade and natural disasters.

Candidates in two Ascension Parish judicial races also are slated to speak, a news release from the Ascension Republican Women said.

Cost for the lunch is $15. Guests are welcome.

Guests and members are asked to donate dried or canned red or white beans or rice, which will be donated to the St. Theresa Food Bank.

Volunteers sought

Volunteers are needed Sept. 19 to Sept. 21 for a building project at Kidz Kove Discovery Park in Gonzales.

The Community Build Day will involve the installation of the special equipment going in the park, event organizers said.

Anyone interested in helping is asked to arrive between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Volunteers must be 18 and older. The park is at 712 N. Francois St.

Barbecue plate lunches

Volunteers with the 7th District Volunteer Fire Department are selling barbecue plate lunches Saturday at the department’s station, 13337 La. 44, Gonzales.

Proceeds will be used to purchase needed equipment.

The plate lunches will sell for $5 and include barbecue chicken, rice dressing, baked beans and bread.

Drive-through service will be available.

Pickups begin at 10:30 a.m.
